The Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. -- J.B.S. Haldane, 1927

These Are My Letters To The World
These are my letters to the world
That never wrote to me
A letter each to every shore
And every shining sea--
A letter each to sunlit lands
And high alcoved trees
To endless roving moonlit paths
And winds among the lees--
In loneliness I write these words
In loneliness and Need--
These Are My Letters To The World
That Never Wrote To Me.
And when I sit here, by myself
With no-one else to see
Except my Mirror Image, there
A-waving back at me--
And when I touch his fingers--thus--
In desperate gentle need
And kiss his nonexistent lips
It doesn't set me free.
And so I sit upon the sill
And look out on the land
And hope for someone to come up
And (maybe) hold my hand
And when they don't and I am cold
I look outside and scream:
THESE ARE MY LETTERS TO THE WORLD
THAT NEVER WROTE TO ME.
